The Visual Novel examples

The Visual Novel folder of the Divooka Explore example pack teaches Novella in order, from three nodes to a whole game. Every document runs as it is, and the two complete games carry their art, sound and scripts in the document's library.

ExampleStyleWhat it teaches
Hello NovellaRoutine graphThe smallest game: Make Novella Game, Load Script with the story on a Text node, Run. The story has no art yet, so Novella draws placeholders.
Characters and ImagesRoutine graphA game configured from nodes rather than script definitions: Define Image, Define Character, Set Theme and Set Default.
Story as NodesFlows graphA scene built as data, from Start Sequence to a Menu of Make Choice nodes, and a story assembled into a Game Definition.
Game as a FunctionFunction and Flows graphsA member Function graph, Build Game, returns a Game Definition, and the Flows graph calls it and plays it.
Live ScriptEvents graphA Novella Application whose Script event is the story, with a Menu's answer feeding a Branch, and why a live script cannot be saved.
CommandsEvents graphThe script's run roll and run greet "Wei" answered by the Command event through Set Result, with Get Variable and Set Variable reaching the story's variables.
Moon Festival RiddlesEvents graphA small complete game: lantern riddles at the Mid-Autumn Festival, three riddles, two endings, a gallery picture and three achievements.
The Red ThreadEvents graphThe sample game, whole: 87 files embedded in the library, Setup loading them and Command answering the story's fortune.

Run any of them, or play a definition from the Custom Preview in the Properties panel: select Make Game Definition, or any Sequence, Label or Story node, after a run and press Custom Preview.

Routine graph

Hello Novella

Three nodes and a Text node make a game. The story names a courtyard and a girl it has no pictures for, so Novella draws placeholders: a gradient for the background, a silhouette for the character, each labelled with the image it stands for. A game looks like this before its art exists, and it is already playable.

Characters and Images

A game configured from nodes instead of script definitions: Define Image makes colour panels beside the built-in black and white, Define Character gives two speakers their colours and image tags, and Set Theme and Set Default finish the job.

Two placeholder characters, lan and bai, over a purple panel, with Old Bai speaking
Two characters and a background, defined from nodes.

Commands

A story asks its program for things with run. Here the script's run roll and run greet "Wei" arrive at the Command event, which branches on the command's name and answers through Set Result; the story reads the answer as _return. Random Integer draws from the story's own generator, so rolling back and throwing again draws the same number.

A placeholder character, Ming, proposing a dice game for a mooncake
Ming proposes a throw of the dice.
Events graph: Setup defines the teahouse, Ming and the script; the Command event branches on Equals to Random Integer and Format, or to Get Variable, Set Variable and Format
The Commands Events graph: Setup above, the Command event below.
